The debate whether Atlantis existed has been around for thousands of years and it all started by the Greek philosopher Plato. His dialogues from about 355 B.C. are the only known historical sources of information about the mysterious city. In Plato’s dialogues he states that the island called Atlantis ‘in a single day and night… disappeared into the depths of the sea.’
Lead researcher Richard Freund, of the University of Hartford claims that his research team and himself have finally located Atlantis. Where did they finally find the lost city? Spain! Just north of Cadiz to be exact.
The team used a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology to survey the site for two years. What tipped the team off to looking at this area of Spain was the discovery of ‘memorial cities’ in the surrounding area.
Memorial cities are though to be made up of the refugees of Atlantis who needed to create a new home inland after the cities likely destruction by a tsunami.
It is still hard to know if the site in Spain is actually Atlantis but Freund has confidence in the finding of these memorial cities. He also claims ‘we found something that no one else has ever seen before’.
To see his team’s findings you will need to watch ‘Finding Atlantis’ on the National Geographic Channel.
