A University of Alberta medical team lead by Dr Michelakis published an article in 2007 with a potential cure for cancer using a inexpensive drug known world wide called Dichloroacetate (DCA). In 2007 Dr Michelakis and his team worked on test tube samples with findings that suggested the DCA drug achieves ‘antitumor effects by altering the metabolism of cancer’. DCA was found to take away cancers most important strength, the resistance to death (of the tumor).
Since 2007 several independent groups across the world have confirmed the Alberta teams findings. Dr Michelakis and his team also committed the drug to clinical trials with similar findings. In 49 patients over 2 years they showed that tumors responded to DCA the same way the test tube samples reacted by changing the tumors metabolism.
Now comes the interesting part, the patients Dr Michelakis tested in Alberta had the deadliest of all human cancers: a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. The cure, however, cannot be confirmed as 100% safe because of the small sample size and the lack of funding for the treatment trials. Mainly public institutions have funded the trials and research since day one: University of Alberta and Alberta Health Sciences. Their lack of funding and little access to patients with this particular form of cancer create a setback and their studies can only go so far.
So why has no one other than what seems to be a small medical community noticed these findings and put them into practice? Some people attribute this to the large drug companies trying to leave this information quite because of the affordability and accessibility to this well-known drug Dichloroacetate. The large drug companies make millions every year off the current long and expensive treatments like chemotherapy.
The question I have begun to raise is where does all the public funding go for cancer research? Cancer fundraisers, runs, etc.?
The world is run by an engine running rich on 1000-dollar bills but is humanity that evil, or am I missing something?
the funding goes to host *more* fundraisers and runs... those ribbons and cancer merch doesnt just pay for itself
